Health experts say digestive complaints such as gas, acidity, indigestion, constipation, and bloating commonly increase during the month of Ramazan due to sudden changes in eating patterns.
According to medical specialists, these problems are often caused by overeating at iftar, consuming food carelessly, and lying down immediately after meals.
They stress that how food is eaten is just as important as what is eaten. Meals should be consumed slowly, chewed thoroughly, and taken in moderation. Even at sehri, people are advised to avoid overburdening the stomach despite fasting for long hours.
Doctors warn that lying down immediately after eating can worsen digestive issues by slowing the natural digestive process.
Experts also recommend a simple traditional remedy for mild stomach discomfort. The mixture includes equal quantities of dried lemon, pomegranate seeds, dried mint, and fennel seeds — about 50 grams each — ground into a fine powder. Taking one teaspoon of this mixture with water after sehri and iftar may help reduce acidity, gas, bitterness in the mouth, indigestion, and bloating.
Health professionals have also dismissed the common belief that soft drinks help relieve indigestion or heartburn. They note that carbonated beverages can increase stomach acidity due to their soda content, potentially worsening symptoms.
Similarly, consuming tea or coffee immediately after iftar is discouraged.
Experts explain that caffeine can slow digestive activity, leading to continued discomfort and heaviness after breaking the fast.
Medical specialists advise that maintaining a balanced diet, practicing moderation, and following simple preventive measures can help individuals observe Ramadan in a healthier way.
