Aaqib Javed, member of the selection committee, has stated that the reappointment of Babar Azam as Test captain is aimed at strengthening technical stability ahead of the forthcoming series against the West Indies and England.
In a special conversation with Samaa TV, Aaqib Javed said that Babar Azam remains among the team’s leading players, underlining the need for continuity in leadership during the next phase.
He stated that Babar Azam is likely to continue in the role for a period of two to three years, adding that any consideration of his removal from the set-up is not currently under discussion.
Javed referred to the previous leadership phase, saying that Shan Masood was given a fair period of assessment, although performances in certain series, including the tour of Bangladesh, raised questions.
He added that both the team management and the captain hold responsibility for selection matters, and that sudden changes in leadership are not being considered.
Javed said that, in view of the upcoming series against the West Indies and England, leadership has once again been entrusted to Babar Azam.
He also addressed the central contracts system, stating that its purpose is to reduce the influence of domestic franchise leagues on player focus, following concerns over divided attention among some cricketers.
He said the 2-0 defeat against Bangladesh as unacceptable from a technical standpoint, calling for a comprehensive review.
Javed emphasised the importance of former players in developing emerging talent, referring to Mushtaq Ahmed, who served as a consultant with the Pakistan Cricket Board for several years, though his contract was not renewed due to inconsistency in his availability between Bangladesh and England.
He praised Shad Masood’s performance as a batter over the last six to seven Tests, highlighting a clear improvement in form.
Several emerging players, including Ubaid Shah, Abdullah Fazal, and Azaan Awais, have been included in future planning.
Squad included 140kph-plus fast bowlers
He added that the selected squad aims to include at least three fast bowlers capable of exceeding speeds of 140 kilometres per hour, as part of strengthening the team’s attacking resources.
He maintained that franchise leagues have contributed to confusion among some players, which has had an impact on overall performance.
