A new study has revealed that weight training and resistance exercises can play a significant role in increasing a person’s lifespan and reducing the risk of premature death.
The research, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, analyzed data from more than 147,000 adults across the United States. The findings were based on information collected through three major clinical studies that followed participants for nearly 30 years.
More than 35,000 participants died during the study period, giving researchers a unique opportunity to compare lifestyle habits with long-term health outcomes.
Participants reported the amount of time they spent each week performing resistance exercises, including weightlifting, gym machine workouts and other muscle-strengthening activities. They also provided details about aerobic exercises such as walking, cycling and swimming.
Researchers then examined the relationship between these exercise routines and deaths caused by various health conditions. These included heart disease, cancer, respiratory illnesses and neurological disorders.
The goal was to determine whether muscle-strengthening activities offered health benefits beyond those associated with traditional aerobic exercise.
Moderate resistance training linked to lower death risk
The findings showed that people who engaged in moderate levels of resistance exercise had a significantly lower risk of death compared to those who did not participate in such activities.
According to the researchers, the positive effects remained noticeable even after adjusting for factors such as age, smoking habits, diet, alcohol consumption, family medical history and other forms of physical activity.
Experts say the study adds to growing evidence that muscle-strengthening exercises provide more than physical fitness benefits.
In addition to improving strength and mobility, resistance training may contribute to better overall health and help reduce the likelihood of premature death.
