Thunderstorms and rain are expected in Lahore and several districts of Punjab as a new weather system enters the country, bringing relief from intense heat but also raising concerns over urban flooding, hail and glacial lake outburst risks in northern areas.
According to the Meteorological Department and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), rain is expected in various districts of Punjab, including Lahore.
Lahore is likely to receive rain with thundershowers, while the current spell is expected to continue until June 20. The PDMA said the intensity of heat is expected to decrease due to the rains.
Light to heavy rain, hail likely
Authorities said some areas may receive light rain, while heavy rainfall is expected in other parts of the province. The PDMA also warned that hail may occur at a few places during the weather spell.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious during strong winds, thunderstorms and heavy downpours.
NDMA issues countrywide weather alert
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for strong winds, thundershowers and hail in different parts of the country. The alert will remain effective from today until June 20.
According to the NDMA, a fresh rain system is entering the upper and northern parts of Pakistan.
The NDMA said rain with strong winds is expected in several districts of Islamabad and Punjab. Thunderstorms are also likely in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.
The authority added that wind and rain have also been forecast for many areas of Balochistan and Sindh.
Flood risk in northern areas
The NDMA warned that rising temperatures and rainfall may increase the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas. There is also a risk of flooding in rivers and streams due to glacier melting and possible glacial lake outburst floods.
Flood alerts have been issued for several areas, including Hassanabad, Shishper, Passu, Nagar and Skardu.
Authorities have urged local administrations and residents in at-risk areas to remain alert and take precautionary measures.
