The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a public holiday across the province on the occasion of 1st Muharram 1448 Hijri.
The decision was formally communicated through a notification issued by the provincial Administration Department.
According to the official notification, 1st Muharram 1448 Hijri will be observed as a public holiday throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Government offices and public institutions across the province are expected to remain closed on the day in observance of the Islamic New Year.
The administration department issued the notification as part of preparations for the beginning of the new Hijri year.
Holiday linked to moon-sighting announcement
The provincial government clarified that the implementation of the public holiday will be subject to the official announcement regarding the sighting of the Muharram moon.

According to the notification, the holiday will take effect only after confirmation by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The final date of the holiday will therefore depend on the committee’s declaration regarding the start of Muharram 1448 Hijri.
Preparations for new Islamic year
Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar and holds significant religious importance for Muslims across Pakistan and around the world.
Provincial authorities typically make administrative arrangements ahead of the new Hijri year, including public holiday notifications and security planning for religious gatherings.
With the issuance of the latest notification, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has formally announced its plans for observing the first day of Muharram, pending the official moon-sighting decision.
