The second generating unit of the Gomal Zam Hydel Power Station, which had remained affected for a prolonged period, has also been restored.
Gomal Zam Power units offline since 2016 fault
The power station is now operating at its full generation capacity of 17.4 megawatts. The Wapda spokesperson said both generating units of the Gomal Zam Hydel Power Station ceased operations in October 2016 due to a technical fault. One unit was restored through Wapda’s own resources in June 2018; however, the second unit had remained unrestored for almost 10 years.
Power station at half capacity for eight years
The power station had been producing electricity at half of its capacity for the past eight years. Work on restoring the second unit commenced in April 2026 at a cost of Rs359.5 million. The project was completed within a record period of 80 days and the unit has now been connected to the national grid.
The Gomal Zam Hydel Power Station has two generating units, each with a capacity of 8.7 megawatts. The complete restoration of the project is expected to provide significant relief from load-shedding in remote areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The dam has a total water storage capacity of 1.14 million acre-feet. In addition to producing low-cost electricity, it irrigates more than 191,000 acres of agricultural land.
