Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, suffered a widespread outage on Monday, leaving thousands of users unable to load timelines, profiles and key features across desktop and mobile.
X was down for thousands of users globally on Monday, according to outage-tracking website Downdetector.com.
More than 9,800 reports of issues with the platform had been recorded as of 10:18am ET, Downdetector data showed. The number of outage reports later rose to around 35,000, based on user-submitted data on the website.
Users affected in several countries
The outage affected users across multiple countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and India.
According to Downdetector, X was also down for more than 1,300 users in Canada as of 10:16am ET and for more than 1,400 users in the UK as of 10:18am ET.
Reports showed that problems began shortly after 9am Eastern time, with complaints rising sharply within minutes after only a handful of earlier reports.
Desktop and mobile users face issues
Many early complaints focused on problems connecting to X through desktop browsers. However, users also reported growing issues with the mobile app over time.
Some users said the platform was partially functional, but key features such as profiles, recent posts, media and replies were not loading properly.
As X remained inaccessible for many, users moved to Downdetector’s comment section, which quickly turned into a temporary chat room.
One user wrote that “X isn’t loading,” while another said users could post but were unable to view recent posts, media or replies on PC and web.
Others directed their frustration at Elon Musk, who acquired the platform formerly known as Twitter in 2022.
Cause remains unclear
The cause of the outage was not immediately clear.
X did not respond to a request for comment, while Reuters reported that SpaceX, which owns X, also did not immediately respond to questions about what caused the disruption.
Downdetector tracks outages by collecting status reports from several sources, including user submissions. The actual number of affected users may differ from the figures shown on the platform.
Other platforms also see outage reports
X was not the only platform facing problems on Monday.
Downdetector also showed a sharp rise in reports for Reddit, with more than 3,000 complaints, while X had more than 26,000 reports at one stage.
Several other apps and services, including Zoom, Canva and Fortnite, also saw spikes in outage reports, suggesting the disruption may have been linked to cloud infrastructure.
No official cause had been confirmed at the time of reporting.
