Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway has become the subject of viral online speculation following the release of a new batch of Jeffrey Epstein documents. However, the records do not support the claims circulating on social media.
The controversy emerged after the U.S. Department of Justice released additional Epstein-related files in January 2026, prompting users online to examine references to celebrities, politicians, business figures, and other public personalities named in the documents.
Viral claims spread across social media
Posts shared across multiple platforms alleged that Hathaway was listed as a “highly desired guest for Bill Gates” in the newly released files.
The claim gained significant traction online, with videos and social media posts attracting millions of views as users discussed the contents of the documents.
However, a review of the records indicates that the widely shared claim is not supported by the released material.
According to reports, Hathaway's name appeared in a single email sent by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to Boris Nikolić, a former adviser and associate of Bill Gates, in 2013.
In the email, Epstein reportedly suggested a list of well-known celebrities as potential invitees for a fundraiser connected to Gates.
Hathaway's name was included among those suggested individuals.
No evidence of contact or involvement
The released documents contain no evidence that Hathaway was contacted, invited to attend an event, participated in any fundraiser, or had any involvement with Epstein's activities.
The files also do not describe Hathaway as a “highly desired guest for Bill Gates,” despite the claim being widely circulated online.
The incident highlights how names appearing in Epstein-related records can sometimes be taken out of context, leading to misleading narratives and viral misinformation.
Experts have urged the public to distinguish between individuals who are merely mentioned in documents and those for whom there is evidence of direct involvement in wrongdoing.
As scrutiny of the newly released Epstein files continues, no evidence has emerged linking Hathaway to any criminal conduct or to Epstein beyond the brief reference contained in the 2013 email.
The documents, as released, do not indicate any relationship between the actress and Epstein, nor do they suggest participation in any illegal activity.
