Two vessels of the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) were involved in separate accidents within a span of four days.
Sources divulged on Friday that a fire broke out aboard the vessel Shalamar, while several containers on the vessel Sibi were displaced during rough weather. The fire incident occurred on the PNSC vessel Shalamar about 80 miles off the coast of Gwadar. The vessel was rescued by the Pakistan Navy and is being brought to Karachi.
Meanwhile, the PNSC vessel Sibi, which was travelling from Khor Fakkan Port to Karachi, encountered severe weather and was involved in an incident at sea. Strong tides and rough conditions caused the vessel to become unstable, resulting in several containers being displaced.
The vessel was rescued and berthed at the Karachi International Container Terminal.
Sources said the incidents resulted in heavy financial losses. No casualties were reported.
The PNSC spokesperson said that severe monsoon conditions during the vessel's third voyage caused containers aboard Sibi to shift from their positions, adding that the vessel was carrying 307 containers, of which between 25 and 30 sustained damage. No container fell into the sea and all cargo remains secure aboard the vessel.
"The MV Sibi sustained no structural damage and remains fully seaworthy," the PNSC spokesperson maintained.
