The prime minister announced a reduction of Rs74 per litre in the price of petrol and Rs67 per litre in the price of diesel. Following the cut, the price of petrol will fall from Rs373 to Rs299 per litre, while diesel will decline from Rs378 to Rs311 per litre.
He said the government fully understood the difficulties faced by the public and appreciated their patience and resilience during challenging circumstances. He added that the federal government utilised Rs129 billion from development allocations and savings achieved through austerity measures to provide relief from the unprecedented rise in oil prices.
PM Shehbaz said that, at a time when some countries were introducing fuel rationing measures, Pakistan avoided an energy crisis through effective planning. He said there were no long queues at fuel stations and no shortage of petroleum products across the country.
The prime minister said the federal and provincial governments worked together to maintain economic stability and shield the public from the effects of global inflation. He thanked the provincial chief ministers for their cooperation during the period.
He said every reduction in international oil prices was being passed directly to consumers and pledged to continue efforts aimed at economic stability and lower inflation. He added that, alongside government austerity measures, support was also provided to underprivileged segments of society.
PM Shehbaz said providing maximum relief to the public remained the government's foremost priority. He stated that peace in the Middle East became possible through Pakistan's mediation efforts and described the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a historic document.
The prime minister said Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir deserved special congratulations for his role in the peace agreement, which he said was made possible through sustained efforts and professional expertise.
He also paid tribute to Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and other members of the government involved in the peace initiative.
PM Shehbaz commended the economic team, including Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and senior officials, for their efforts during the economic crisis.
