A government source has dismissed reports suggesting that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is preparing to resign, insisting that he remains focused on governing the country amid growing political speculation.
The clarification comes after media reports, including claims published by The Observer, suggested that the prime minister could step down as early as Monday and outline a timetable for his departure.
However, the government source rejected those assertions and pointed to Starmer’s continued engagement with his official responsibilities.
Govt source pushes back on resignation claims
According to the government source, Keir Starmer is “focused on getting on with the job of governing” and is not preparing any resignation announcement.
The source emphasized that the prime minister has repeatedly maintained his commitment to leading the government despite ongoing political pressure and speculation within Westminster.
The reports of possible resignation come amid increased tension inside the Labour Party, where internal divisions have reportedly intensified in recent months.
Some senior Labour figures have been speculating about a possible leadership statement, while others have publicly called for clarity regarding the party’s future direction.
Rival leadership speculation
Attention has also turned to potential challengers, including Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who is widely viewed as a possible successor in the event of a leadership contest.
Burnham recently secured a political victory in a by-election context, strengthening his position within the party and fueling further speculation about a possible leadership bid.
Keir Starmer led Labour to a landslide election victory in 2024, but his leadership has since faced growing scrutiny due to political challenges and internal party dissatisfaction.
Despite this, the government source reiterated that the prime minister remains fully engaged in his duties and continues to focus on governance rather than internal party speculation.
