Israel fired missiles at Beirut before the signing of a memorandum of understanding as the Iranian officials termed as an attempt to sabotage the negotiation process.
Three Lebanese people were killed and six others injured in the attack. According to an international news agency, several buildings sustained damage in the strike. The Israeli military claimed that a Hezbollah command centre was targeted.
The Israeli prime minister and defence minister confirmed the attacks on Beirut. Israel had assured US President Donald Trump only days earlier that it would not carry out strikes on the Lebanese capital.
Earlier, Lebanon's state news agency reported that Israeli air strikes targeted several villages in southern Lebanon, including Tyre, the Reihan and Sojod areas near Jezzine in Nabatieh Governorate. According to the report, Reihan Mayor Ali Badi was killed in one of the attacks.
Israel declared all areas south of the Zahrani River a "war zone" last month, and heavy strikes have continued across the region since then.
Baqer Qalibaf, head of Iran's negotiating team, said the United States either lacks the intention to honour its commitments or does not possess the ability to do so. He said the strike on Beirut once again demonstrated Washington's inability to restrain Israel.
Qalibaf said no concessions could be secured by offering incentives to the Zionist state. He added that the "good cop, bad cop" approach had become outdated and that negotiations could not continue without both the intention and the ability to fulfil commitments.
The developments came a day after US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement with Iran was expected on Sunday and that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened.
