OpenAI is preparing to launch a revamped version of ChatGPT in the coming weeks, with plans to expand the platform into a “super app” featuring coding tools and AI agents, the Financial Times reported.
According to TechCrunch, the company aims to strengthen its position against rival Anthropic, particularly among business customers, while moving closer to profitability ahead of a potential initial public offering.
The report said OpenAI intends to make ChatGPT a gateway to paid products and services, including its coding tool, Codex. One senior OpenAI employee told the Financial Times: “Chat is dead.”
Thibault Sottiaux, who leads OpenAI’s core product and platform division, said the company is working towards a product that provides users with a personal agent capable of assisting with both personal and professional tasks.
Reports of OpenAI’s ambition to develop a super app have circulated since last year.
In March, The Wall Street Journal reported that the strategy marks a significant shift for the company. After introducing several standalone products in 2025, OpenAI executives have indicated a move away from projects described internally as “side quests”, including the video-generation tool Sora.
