Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has issued a strong response over alleged violations of the Easter ceasefire in Ukraine and the reported detention of a Russian child in Mexico.
Zakharova alleged that Ukraine failed to demonstrate a serious commitment to peace during the Easter ceasefire, announced by President Vladimir Putin from April 11 to 12, claiming Ukrainian forces breached the truce more than 6,000 times.
She said President Volodymyr Zelensky did not issue any clear directive to enforce the ceasefire, indicating an absence of serious intent from Kyiv towards peace. Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Mexico’s ambassador to Moscow, Eduardo Villegas Mejías, expressing grave concern over the alleged unlawful detention of a Russian minor.
Zakharova stated that the young Russian citizen, Kristina Romanova, is being held in a closed institution under the custody of Mexican child welfare authorities. Moscow has demanded immediate consular access and the child’s return to Russia.
She added that Russia is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with State Duma Deputy Chairperson Anna Kuznetsova and Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova.
Zakharova further noted that the Russian embassy in Mexico has been engaged in the matter since 2023, and that the child has expressed a desire to return to Russia on several occasions. Both matters carry international significance, and Moscow will continue its efforts to safeguard its citizens and address regional conflicts.
