Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that indirect talks between the United States and Iran were held, with both delegations visiting Pakistan at the country’s invitation.
Speaking at a federal cabinet meeting, the prime minister said that high-level discussions between the two countries took place after 47 years, and he expressed gratitude to the presidents of both Iran and the United States for accepting Pakistan’s invitation.
He said that both sides had earlier announced a two-week ceasefire, after which their delegations came to Pakistan. The prime minister stated that Pakistan was given an opportunity by Allah to play a role in mediation and peace efforts, calling it a rare honour for the country.
He added that the negotiations between the US and Iranian delegations continued for 21 hours, marking the first time both sides had sat together for talks. He said the ceasefire between the two countries is still holding, although some issues remain unresolved and efforts are ongoing to address them.
Shehbaz Sharif further said that international leaders, including the Japanese prime minister and European officials, had appreciated Pakistan’s role. He also praised Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying that his guidance and leadership contributed to the agreement on the ceasefire.
