Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed optimism that a temporary ceasefire will be turned into a permanent one.
Chairing a meeting of the federal cabinet on Wednesday, the prime minister briefed members on diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between the United States and Iran. Cabinet members commended national security measures, diplomatic strategy and the leadership’s role.
The cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of the prime minister, decided to observe a day of thanksgiving following the ceasefire. A strategy was also finalised regarding talks between Iran and the United States to be held in Islamabad.
Speaking at the meeting, PM Shehbaz said the region and the world must be saved from the flames of conflict and made peaceful. He said Pakistan was playing a key role in the promotion of peace and that the country’s stature had been raised.
He added that Pakistan had the honour of hosting talks between the United States and Iran, and reiterated that the temporary ceasefire would be turned into a lasting one. He praised the efforts of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.
Moreover, PM Shehbaz is expected to address the nation today. In his speech, he will inform the public about the latest developments in the region and Pakistan's stance, as well as the country's diplomatic efforts to promote peace. He may also outline the government's strategy regarding petroleum product prices and consumption.
Discussions are anticipated on measures to tackle the energy crisis and to conserve fuel. Sources divulged that the prime minister will appeal to the nation for unity and a sense of responsibility during these difficult times.
Separately, Power Minister Awais Leghari, in a message on X, extended congratulations to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

He said that the prime minister and the Field Marshal ensured a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. He said that what seemed impossible a day earlier had been made possible by the two leaders.
He added that their efforts saved the entire region from destruction and unrest, terming it exemplary diplomacy and a strong case for the Nobel Peace Prize.
