Iraqi police in Basra have launched a search operation for an American pilot after reports emerged that a US aircraft came down in the southern Iraqi province. The incident, first reported by Al Jazeera Arabic, remains unconfirmed by US military authorities.
Officials say the cause of the incident is still unclear, with conflicting claims circulating about whether the aircraft crashed accidentally or was shot down.
According to Al Jazeera Arabic, the Basra Police Command dispatched search teams on Thursday to locate an American pilot after an aircraft reportedly crashed within the province.
Police authorities said the aircraft had come down within Basra’s borders, prompting immediate search operations across the area.
At the time of the report, the pilot had not yet been located, and authorities were continuing their search efforts.
Cause of incident unclear
Initial information from Iraqi police referred to the incident as a crash, but the exact circumstances remain uncertain. It is still unclear whether the aircraft experienced mechanical failure, crashed accidentally, or was involved in a hostile shootdown.
No official investigation findings have been released, leaving the situation unresolved.
Social media claims unverified
Following the reports of the aircraft going down, several unverified social media accounts claimed that a US fighter jet had been shot down over Basra. However, these claims have not been confirmed by any official authority.
The distinction between a combat-related shootdown and an accidental crash remains unclear at this stage.
US Central Command yet to confirm
As the reports circulated, US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations in the Middle East, had not issued any statement confirming or denying the alleged crash.

The lack of an official statement has added to the uncertainty surrounding the situation.
A US official later told Al Jazeera that reports suggesting a US fighter jet had been shot down over Basra province were not accurate.
The official denial further complicated the situation, as authorities have not yet clarified whether an aircraft actually crashed or what caused the incident.
