The unofficial and non-final results of Bangladesh’s general election continue to arrive, showing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leading with 82 seats.
Jamaat-e-Islami has secured 27 seats and stands in second place. According to details, the Bangladesh Jatiya Party has taken third place after winning one seat. Islami Andolan Bangladesh has also won one seat.
The National Citizen Party, backed by the student movement, has gained one seat. Three independent candidates have also been successful.
The elections are taking place after the fall of Hasina Wajid’s government.
Voting began at 6:30am Pakistan time and continued until 3:00pm, during which more than 120.7 million voters cast their ballots across 299 of the 300 seats. One constituency’s election was postponed due to the death of a candidate.
Bangladeshi media reported a few unpleasant incidents, though the overall election process remained peaceful. Three election officials were removed from duty over allegations of ballot irregularities, and three people were injured in a petrol bomb attack in Gopalganj.
According to the Bangladesh Election Commission, turnout was recorded at 47.9 per cent by 2pm. Final turnout could be much higher.
Alongside the general election, voters also took part in a referendum on the July National Charter. The public’s opinion on the referendum will be revealed along with the election results.
