Niger has begun implementing retaliatory diplomatic measures against the United States, announcing a sweeping ban on visas for US citizens. The decision comes in direct response to new US entry restrictions targeting Niger.
According to the Niger News Agency (ANP), Niger has completely and permanently stopped issuing visas to all US citizens. The move also indefinitely bars American nationals from entering Niger’s territory.
The report cited a Nigerien diplomatic source who confirmed that the measures have already begun to take effect this week.
The diplomatic source said the decision was taken on the principle of reciprocity. It reflects Niger’s determination to safeguard its national sovereignty and signals an evolution in Niamey’s foreign policy posture.
Officials framed the move as a firm but measured response to what they see as an unequal treatment of Nigerien citizens.
Diplomatic fallout
The retaliatory action follows a proclamation signed by US President Donald Trump on December 16. The order expands the list of countries whose citizens face full or partial entry restrictions to nearly 40 nations. Under the proclamation, the measures are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026.
Niger is among the countries facing full restrictions on the entry of its nationals into the United States. US authorities have not publicly detailed specific conditions under which Nigerien citizens could regain visa eligibility.
The inclusion of Niger on the list has prompted concern within the country and accelerated diplomatic pushback.
Shift in Niamey’s foreign policy stance
The diplomatic source emphasized that the visa ban signals a broader shift in Niamey’s approach to international relations. Niger aims to assert greater independence in its dealings with global partners.
The move underscores growing tensions between Niger and Western nations amid broader geopolitical realignments in the Sahel region.
