Advisor to the prime minister, Rana Sanaullah said on Thursday that the draft of the 27th amendment will be presented in the federal cabinet tomorrow (Friday).
Expressing his thoughts on Samaa TV’s programme "Nadeem Malik Live", Sanaullah said: "After the federal cabinet’s approval, the draft will be submitted to the Senate. Following that, it will be presented in the National Assembly on Monday or Tuesday." Sanaullah said the draft of the 27th amendment will also be sent to the standing committees.
He said: "The standing committees will discuss the draft for two days. If the Senate approves the draft on Monday, three days will be required for approval in the National Assembly."
Sanaullah maintained: "We have consulted with the allies and obtained their confidence. No action will be taken without consultation. What is agreed upon by all will be implemented. Matters without agreement will be considered for amendments later."
He said the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) agree on the establishment of a constitutional court. Matters that achieve consensus will become part of the 27th amendment. Matters without consensus will be deferred to a future date."
Sanaullah maintained: "The constitutional amendment proposes the elimination of dual nationality. The draft of the 27th amendment will be presented in the House. The PTI may submit proposals and amendments."
He said: "The PTI has resigned from the committees. It does not wish to sit with us. Consultations with Maulana Fazlur Rehman are ongoing."
Local bodies are included in the agenda of the 27th amendment. If the amendment passes, elections for local governments must be held within four years. It is hoped that the PPP will respond positively to the NFC Award.
"All meetings held with the allies received a positive response. The proposal to increase the retirement age of judges for the constitutional court is correct," said Sanaullah.
"The number of judges in the constitutional court may be around eight. This time, only one draft of the constitutional amendment will be presented. The status of the Supreme Court and the constitutional court will be equal," the PML-N stalwart said.
Sanaullah said: "The constitutional court will have a chief judge. The Supreme Court will have a Chief Justice. The judicial commission will have the authority over the appointment and transfer of judges."
He said the judicial commission is a separate body that can dismiss and confirm judges, adding that the deputy commissioners will not be as powerful as they were before.
