Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to protecting press freedom and ensuring justice for crimes committed against journalists, emphasizing that free and responsible journalism forms the foundation of any democratic society.
In his message on the International Day to End Crimes against Journalists, PM Sharif said that journalism plays a vital role in enabling public access to facts and serving as a bearer of truth. He stressed that a free and responsible press is indispensable for transparency, accountability, and democracy.
“Today reminds us of the fact that free, informed, and responsible journalism is the foundation of any democratic society,” Shehbaz Sharif stated.
The prime minister condemned acts of violence, intimidation, and retaliation against journalists, saying such crimes are “an attack on freedom of expression.”
He acknowledged the risks faced by reporters who carry out their duties under difficult and sometimes dangerous circumstances.
Tribute to journalists who sacrificed for truth
Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to journalists who have endured hardships or lost their lives in the line of duty. “I pay tribute to all those journalists who have endured hardships for the sake of truth and justice, and express solidarity with the families of those writers and media workers who have lost their loved ones in the line of duty,” he said.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed that the Government of Pakistan is determined to provide a safe environment for media professionals. He said the state will take all possible measures to ensure effective investigation, justice delivery, and legal action against perpetrators of crimes targeting journalists.
He underscored that protecting journalists is not just a moral obligation but a key step toward strengthening democracy and rule of law in the country.
Shehbaz Sharif also urged the international community, media institutions, and civil society to play their role in safeguarding journalists and promoting freedom of expression worldwide. “Free journalism is the guarantee of a strong, transparent, and democratic Pakistan,” he remarked.
