On Defence Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif pledged to modernize Pakistan’s defence capabilities and take decisive action against foreign-sponsored threats.
In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz said September 6 marked “a day of bravery, unity and determination” as the country commemorates six decades since its armed forces, with public support, repelled external aggression.
“Our brave armed forces, with the full backing of the people, proved that Pakistan is fully capable of protecting its sovereignty and integrity,” he stated, adding that the “invincible spirit of 1965 is still alive today.”
The premier lauded the army, navy and air force for creating “new history” under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff Gen Syed Asim Munir by “crushing the arrogance of the enemy.”
He said the sacrifices of martyrs and ghazis would remain a source of inspiration for future generations.
Mr Sharif reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising the country’s defence capabilities and confronting the “dual threat of foreign-sponsored terrorism and proxies operating within our borders.” He also expressed solidarity with Kashmiris, terming India’s control of the territory an “illegal occupation.”
President reaffirm support for Kashmir, Palestine
President Asif Ali Zardari, in his separate message, described September 6 as a “golden chapter” in Pakistan’s history, where the sacrifices of 1965 “remain an eternal light guiding future generations.”
He praised the courage of the troops, saying operations such as Radd-ul-Fasaad had strengthened national defence, making it “impregnable.”
Highlighting new challenges, the president cautioned against hybrid warfare, propaganda, and psychological operations, stressing the need to enhance Pakistan’s information and communication systems alongside military strength. He urged the youth to remain vigilant and united in confronting such threats.
Reiterating support for oppressed communities, Mr Zardari said the Kashmir dispute remained the root cause of instability in South Asia and must be resolved for lasting peace. He also urged the global community to take a stand against the “genocide of Palestinians” and support the creation of an independent Palestinian state.
“The families of the martyrs are our honour, and the sacrifices of our veterans are our sacred trust,” he added, assuring that the “spirit of the September War will continue to shine in the resilience of the Pakistani nation.”
