The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) faced a shortfall of Rs50 billion in tax collection during the second month of the current fiscal year.
Sources divulged on Sunday that the shortfall to heavy rainfall, flooding, reduced consumption of electricity and gas and sluggish business activity, including in the real estate sector. Against a target of Rs951 billion for August 2025, the FBR collected Rs901 billion.
In July 2025, the FBR collected Rs762 billion in taxes against a target of Rs750 billion.
Total tax collection for the first two months of the fiscal year stood at Rs1,663 billion. However, a cumulative shortfall of Rs35 billion emerged, as the target for the July–August period had been set at Rs1,698 billion.
The sources privy to the development said that the FBR must now collect more Rs1,465 billion in September 2025. The revenue target for the first quarter of the fiscal year has risen to Rs3,128 billion. The annual tax collection target has been set at Rs14,131 billion.
