A powerful earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Thursday afternoon, shaking buildings and prompting concern across multiple regions. The quake occurred at 3:45pm local time and was widely felt, though no immediate damage was reported.
Epicentre in Pacific Ocean near Yilan
According to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration (CWA), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.2 and was centred 128.9 kilometres east-southeast of Yilan County Hall, beneath the Pacific Ocean. It struck at a depth of 88.1 kilometres, making it a moderately deep seismic event.
Intensity levels across Taiwan
The strongest shaking, measured on Taiwan’s seven-tier intensity scale, reached level 3 in the counties of Yilan, Hualien, Nantou, Taichung, and Taitung. Several other areas, including New Taipei City, Taipei, Keelung, Hsinchu, Taoyuan, Chiayi City, and others, experienced intensity level 2.
Taiwan’s seismic intensity scale measures how strongly an earthquake is felt at a specific location, ranging from level 1 (weakest) to level 7 (strongest).
No immediate reports of damage
Despite the strong magnitude and widespread tremors, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess any potential aftershocks or safety concerns.
