Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced the formation of a task force, led by Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, to ensure the provision of clean drinking water and the elimination of pollution in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The task force will include representatives from WAPDA, the Capital Development Authority (CDA), and other relevant institutions. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister in Islamabad.
Officials briefed the prime minister on the current water supply arrangements from Tarbela, Khanpur and Rawal Dams and the development of an integrated water supply system. He directed that the system be completed without delay to meet the growing needs of the capital.
To address water scarcity, the premier instructed the CDA to prepare a comprehensive plan to recharge underground water reservoirs using rainwater. He also called for the establishment of a dedicated rainwater harvesting and recharging system to help restore declining groundwater levels.
In addition, the prime minister ordered the immediate formation of a water board for Islamabad and adjoining areas. The board will be responsible for the regulation, supply, and quality of water across the region.
Emphasising environmental protection, the prime minister directed that an effective mechanism be implemented to prevent sewage from illegal settlements and slum areas from entering Rawal Dam.
He instructed that a wastewater treatment system be established as a matter of priority to safeguard public health and the environment.
