A technical glitch during Day 1 of the Adelaide Test between India and Australia turned a challenging session for the visitors into a mix of humour and drama.
The glitch saw Mohammed Siraj’s delivery clocked at an astonishing 181.6 kmph – a figure far beyond the realm of possibility, sending cricket fans into a frenzy on social media.
The incident occurred in the 24th over when Siraj, bowling to Australia's Marnus Labuschagne, unleashed a delivery that defied the laws of physics. The speed gun malfunctioned, registering an impossible speed, which quickly became the subject of ridicule and memes on various online platforms.
Fans, in jest, revived the popular ‘DSP Siraj’ memes, offering a light-hearted moment in an otherwise tense match.
However, the day’s proceedings were not limited to technical glitches and online banter. Australia’s opening batsman Marnus Labuschagne had his own issues with distractions as a fan near the sight screen created a beer snake, causing him to step away from the crease.
This interruption led to a heated exchange of words between Siraj and Labuschagne, adding another layer of drama to the encounter. Indian fans, already embroiled in a tense atmosphere, embraced the fiery moment, which briefly lifted their spirits.
On the field, India’s first innings was disappointing. The visitors were bowled out for a modest total of 180 runs, with Nitish Kumar Reddy providing some resistance lower down the order. Australia's bowlers, particularly Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, were relentless, restricting India to a paltry score.
India’s bowlers tried to make inroads with the ball, and Jasprit Bumrah took center stage. The pacer dismissed Usman Khawaja early, claiming his 50th Test wicket of 2024. This milestone placed Bumrah in an elite group alongside Indian greats Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan.
However, Australia responded strongly, with Labuschagne and Steve Smith steadying the ship to reach 86/1 by stumps, leaving India trailing by 94 runs.
Despite the setback, India will be looking to bounce back on Day 2, with Siraj and Bumrah leading the charge. The early signs suggest that this Test will be a closely contested affair, with Australia holding a slight advantage but India still very much in the hunt. For Siraj, the focus will now shift from the speed-gun blunder to precision and pace as the match progresses.
