Los Angeles County public swimming pools will welcome an unusual group of visitors this weekend as dogs take over the water for the annual “Pooches in the Pool” event.
The event will be held on Saturday as the summer swimming season comes to an end, giving local dogs an opportunity to swim and cool off before the pools are drained and cleaned for the year.
Five pools to welcome dogs
The event is organised by the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation in partnership with LA County Animal Care and Control.
Five public pools will participate in this year’s event:
- City Terrace Pool in East Los Angeles
- El Cariso Pool in Sylmar
- Don Knabe Park in Cerritos
- George Lane Pool in Lancaster
- Ted Watkins Park in Los Angeles
Separate sessions for small and large dogs
The swimming event will be divided into two sessions based on the size of the dogs.
Small dogs will be allowed in the pools from 5pm to 6pm, followed by larger dogs from 6pm to 7pm.
Owners will be allowed to remain on the pool deck to supervise and support their pets, but they will not be permitted to enter the water.
Vaccinations required for participation
Dog owners must ensure their pets have up-to-date vaccinations before attending the event.
Participants are also required to bring a completed registration form. Event rules and registration details have been made available through the county’s Parks and Recreation channels.
The annual event gives dogs a chance to splash around and enjoy the water while allowing residents to mark the end of the public pool season in a playful way.
