Pakistan Test cricketer Abdullah Shafique has expressed gratitude to the Higher Power after making a strong comeback in red-ball cricket following an unexpected opportunity against the West Indies.
Speaking to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) digital channel, Shafique said he was playing GSL cricket in the Caribbean but kept himself mentally prepared for a call-up to the national team during the West Indies series.
He credited Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza for encouraging him not to miss any domestic cricket opportunity as he sought to regain his confidence. Shafique said the domestic experience helped him make a strong comeback against the West Indies.
“It's always good to get applause from a player like Babar Azam,” Shafique said.
He said he believed he had to make the most of his opportunity against the West Indies and remain focused on the present moment.
Shafique said a good sportsman must overcome difficulties to avoid the risk of missing more international opportunities. He added that he wanted to perform in domestic cricket to earn his way back into the international side.
The batter has resolved to keep improving his game in international cricket, while keeping in mind that this is the era of video analysis.
Speaking about the upcoming three-match T20I series against England, Shafique said his past experience would help him and that he would also learn from the senior players.
He said players must not only play cricket but also learn from their mistakes.
Shafique also stressed the importance of playing domestic cricket whenever there are no international commitments.
Abdullah Shafique remained unbeaten on 160 and 24 in the second Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad. He received strong support from Babar Azam and spinners Ali Usman and Sajid Khan.
Pakistan will face England in the first of a three-match series on August 19.
