The salaries and allowances of judges of Pakistan’s Supreme Court and High Courts have been significantly increased, with changes also introduced to pension and other post-retirement benefits.
The revised package was approved by President Asif Ali Zardari on the recommendation of the federal government, bringing the salaries and allowances of Supreme Court judges in line with those of judges of the Federal Constitutional Court.
Supreme Court judges get higher salaries
Under the revised package, the monthly basic salary of the Chief Justice of Pakistan has been set at Rs1.505 million, while the basic salary of other Supreme Court judges has been increased to Rs1.5 million.
The basic salary of Supreme Court judges was previously Rs1.1 million.
Their judicial allowance has also been increased from Rs1.161 million to Rs1.5 million per month, representing an increase of around Rs339,000.
Supreme Court judges will also receive a monthly medical allowance of Rs150,000.
Pension package revised
The revised package also includes changes to pension-related provisions.
The age limit of 70 years mentioned in one pension clause has been increased to 75 years, while another age limit has been raised from 85 to 90 years.
Financial benefits for the applicable previous period will also be extended to Supreme Court judges, with arrears from the salary increase to be paid.
High Court judges also receive pay raise
The basic salaries of High Court judges have also been increased, with the revised rates applicable from July 1, 2026.
The monthly basic salary of a High Court chief justice has been fixed at Rs1.254 million, while other High Court judges will receive Rs1.205 million.
The basic salary of High Court judges was previously Rs1.095 million, meaning an increase of Rs110,000 per month.
New benefits for former chief justices
The revised package also introduces a new facility for judges who have served as chief justices for more than two years.
In case of retirement or promotion to a higher court, eligible former chief justices will be allowed to purchase a car at a discounted price.
Retired judges will also be able to obtain permission to receive fees for arbitration cases involving the federal government.
