A shopping centre in Russia has announced plans to open what it describes as the world’s first indoor fishing pond.
According to an announcement by Moscow’s Gagarinsky Shopping Centre, the facility is due to open later this year to offer visitors a unique form of entertainment.
Fishing is traditionally regarded as an outdoor activity, but the Moscow shopping centre intends to bring the experience indoors. A 10-metre by 3-metre artificial pond will be constructed and stocked with several species of fish, including carp, crucian carp, tench, bream, perch and catfish. Up to 16 people will be able to fish at the same time.
Live fish viewing facility added at pond
Fishing rods and bait will be provided on site. Underwater cameras installed in the pond will transmit live footage to a large screen, allowing visitors to watch the movements of the fish in real time.
Natural island: Indoor fishing pond at shopping centre
It remains unclear whether the project will attract serious anglers or serve primarily as a pastime for men waiting while their spouses shop.
The creators of the project say the indoor fishing pond will serve as a natural island within the shopping centre. Birdsong and frog calls will accompany the fishing experience in an effort to create a calm, relaxing and natural atmosphere.
The opening date of the indoor pond and the cost of participation have not yet been announced. Some sources suggest the activity may be free of charge, as visitors will not be permitted to take any fish away. All fish caught must be returned to the pond, although participants will receive points that can be redeemed for various items within the shopping centre.
