The government has taken a major step toward digitizing public services by deciding to make Pakistan’s passport system completely digital.
The move is expected to save citizens from long queues and repeated visits to passport offices by enabling online passport renewal and home delivery services.
Under the new system, citizens will be able to apply for passport renewal online without visiting passport offices for routine processing. Officials said passports will be delivered directly to applicants’ homes after completing the online renewal process.
The online renewal facility will be available through the official passport mobile application, making the process more convenient and accessible.
Zero-paper system
As part of the digital transformation initiative, the government intends to gradually phase out manual passport renewal procedures.
Officials said manual renewal services will eventually be abolished as the passport system transitions to a completely paperless or “zero-paper” model.
The shift is aimed at improving efficiency, reducing processing delays and modernizing passport-related services across the country.
The government has also decided to establish passport counters at NADRA centres nationwide. The initiative is designed to provide multiple public services under one roof, making it easier for citizens to access essential documentation facilities.
According to officials, integrating passport services with NADRA centres will enhance convenience and reduce the burden on standalone passport offices.
Citizens expected to benefit
Authorities believe the digital passport initiative will significantly improve service delivery and public convenience.
By combining online applications, home delivery and passport counters at NADRA centres, citizens will have multiple options to access passport services without unnecessary travel or waiting times.
Officials said the move will provide the public with multiple facilities at one place while supporting the government's broader digital governance goals.
