US Vice President JD Vance has returned home after historic peace talks in Switzerland, describing the negotiations with Iran as highly productive and saying they laid the foundation for change in the Middle East.
Speaking to the media after returning from Switzerland, JD Vance said significant progress had been made during 36 hours of talks with Iran.
He described the discussions as very constructive and said both sides would have to continue working to build on the progress achieved.
Strait of Hormuz mechanism agreed
The US vice president said one of the key successes of the talks was the creation of a mechanism to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. He said the mechanism had already helped restore oil movement through the vital waterway.
According to Vance, millions of barrels of oil had started flowing again, including what he described as 50 million barrels of oil, while prices had begun to come down.
Oil prices start falling
Vance said the reopening mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz had directly contributed to easing pressure on oil markets. He added that as oil flows resumed, prices started declining, offering relief amid concerns over global energy supply.
The US vice president said another major achievement was an agreement on a mechanism to ensure a regional ceasefire. He said the arrangement would help prevent tensions from escalating and support efforts to stabilize the wider region.
Reporter: There was a moment yesterday when Araghchi came into the room and did not greet you. You didn't shake hands, and then he walked out. Did you feel snubbed by that?

Iran ready for nuclear inspections
Vance said Iran had shown willingness to allow nuclear inspectors to return after a long time. He added that the process would help ensure Iran does not develop nuclear weapons.
According to the US vice president, this was one of the most important outcomes of the talks.
Vance also said Iran’s seized assets must be spent on the Iranian people. He emphasized that any financial arrangements should benefit ordinary Iranians and not be diverted away from public needs.

What I did find kind of funny is that, after that initial meeting, there was this sort of social media firestorm where everybody said the Iranians are going to leave, and then we proceeded to talk to them for like the next 9 hours.

Foundation for Middle East change
Summing up the outcome of the negotiations, Vance said a lot of progress had been made over the past few days.
“In the end, I will say this: the foundation for change in the Middle East has been laid,” he said.
The US vice president said the next phase would require continued work, but maintained that the Switzerland talks had created a strong basis for further progress.
