Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi is expected to make a landmark visit to Israel, according to Israeli media reports, in what would be a significant diplomatic development between the two sides.
The visit, if confirmed, would mark his first trip since Israel became the first country to officially recognize the self-declared republic.
Israeli media outlets reported that President Cirro is likely to arrive in Israel on Tuesday.
The visit has not yet been officially confirmed by Somaliland’s presidency or foreign ministry, and no formal statement has been issued so far.
However, the reports have already sparked international attention due to the political sensitivity of the region.
Diplomatic signals shared online
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Somaliland diplomat Ismail Shirwac shared an image showing Somaliland and Israeli flags displayed together in Tel Aviv.
He also suggested that the president’s arrival was expected within days, further fueling speculation about the visit.
Strategic importance of Somaliland
Somaliland lies along the Gulf of Aden, near the southern entrance to the Red Sea, one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.
Experts say Israel’s engagement with Somaliland is partly driven by strategic considerations, including securing influence in a region increasingly affected by geopolitical competition.
The area is also seen as important in countering Iranian influence across the broader Middle East and Horn of Africa.
Regional security concerns
The Houthis, who control large parts of Yemen across the Gulf of Aden, have become a major security concern in the region.
Their threats against Israeli-linked shipping in the Red Sea have further increased tensions, making maritime security a key issue for regional and global powers.
Observers say these developments may have added urgency to diplomatic engagement in the Horn of Africa.
Despite widespread media reports and online speculation, there has been no official confirmation from Somaliland authorities regarding the visit.
Both the presidency and foreign ministry have remained silent on the matter so far.
As a result, the trip remains unverified pending formal announcements.
