OpenAI is reportedly preparing one of the biggest changes to ChatGPT since its launch, with a new design focused on AI agents and coding capabilities rather than conventional chat-based interactions.
According to a report by the Financial Times, the redesigned platform could arrive within the coming weeks as OpenAI seeks to expand ChatGPT’s role from a chatbot into a broader AI productivity platform.
Shift beyond traditional chatbots
The report suggests that OpenAI increasingly views AI agents as the future of its products.
An OpenAI employee was quoted as saying that “chat is dead,” reflecting an internal belief that autonomous AI tools capable of completing tasks may ultimately provide more value than traditional chatbot conversations.
The reported redesign would place greater emphasis on AI agents that can perform actions, automate workflows and assist users beyond simple question-and-answer interactions.
Coding tools set to take center stage
Another major focus of the overhaul is expected to be coding.
OpenAI’s Codex toolset, designed to help users write, understand and manage code, is reportedly being given greater prominence and resources as part of the new strategy.
The move is also seen as an effort to strengthen OpenAI’s position against rivals such as Anthropic, whose AI products have gained popularity among developers and technical users.
New ‘Superapp’ experience
According to the report, OpenAI is developing what has been described internally as a “superapp.”
The redesigned experience would reportedly combine AI agents and coding tools into a unified platform accessible through both web and mobile applications.
The goal appears to be creating a more comprehensive AI ecosystem where users can complete tasks, automate work and develop software from a single interface.
Revenue and IPO ambitions
The reported changes come as OpenAI and other leading AI firms explore new ways to generate revenue from their rapidly growing user bases.
The Financial Times report said OpenAI is working toward a potential public offering in the future, while Anthropic is also reportedly exploring similar long-term ambitions.
Industry observers note that while chatbots attract millions of users, converting those users into paying customers remains a challenge. As a result, AI companies are increasingly investing in tools and services that offer stronger monetization opportunities.
ChatGPT’s evolving business model
The report also follows earlier announcements that ChatGPT would begin introducing advertising features, signaling broader efforts to diversify revenue streams.
By focusing on AI agents, coding assistance and productivity tools, OpenAI appears to be positioning ChatGPT as more than just a conversational assistant.
