Britain’s Chancellor Rachel Reeves has said that ending diplomatic talks with Iran and moving towards military confrontation was a mistake by the United States.
Speaking to an American television channel, Ms Reeves said that at present the best economic policy, not only for Britain but for the wider world, lay in reducing tensions.
The British government has said it will take no part in any United States naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz aimed at increasing pressure on Iran.
Asked whether growing differences between Washington and London over the dispute had affected the special relationship, Ms Reeves rejected the suggestion and said this was not the case.
She added that there was always room for disagreement among allies.
It may be noted that US President Donald Trump has previously threatened to scrap a trade deal with Britain and has on several occasions mocked Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
