Indian rapper Badshah has apologised after his latest song “Tateeree” sparked controversy in the northern Indian state of Haryana.
The backlash led to a police complaint, prompting the artist to remove the track from digital platforms.
The controversy erupted soon after the release of “Tateeree,” which drew criticism for what critics described as objectionable lyrics and visuals.
Several groups, including women’s organisations, objected to the song and alleged that parts of the lyrics disrespected women and crossed cultural boundaries.
As criticism intensified, the song was eventually removed from YouTube.
Badshah issues public apology
In response to the controversy, Badshah—whose real name is Aditya Prateek Singh—shared an apology video on Instagram on March 7.
In the video, he acknowledged the backlash and said he had noticed that some listeners were hurt by the song’s lyrics and visual presentation.

Calling himself a “proud Haryanavi,” the rapper said he never intended to offend people from Haryana or portray women or children in a vulgar manner.
He added that if the track had hurt anyone’s sentiments, he sincerely apologised and hoped the public would forgive him.
Badshah also explained that the lyrics were written within the competitive style of hip-hop music, where artists often include diss lines aimed at rivals.
He emphasised that the song was not directed at women or children and said he has always aimed to represent Haryana’s culture positively.
The rapper said he hopes people would see him as “a son of Haryana” and accept his apology.
Legal action and FIR filed
The controversy also led to legal action.
According to reports, the Haryana Police registered an FIR at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Sector 20 of Panchkula following a complaint filed by social activist Abhay Chaudhary.
Chaudhary alleged that the music video featured girls dressed in school uniforms and described certain scenes as inappropriate.
He also claimed the video used the term “Badshala,” which he said appeared to be a play on the Hindi word “Pathshala” (school), allegedly portraying an educational environment in a derogatory way.
Women’s commission summons rapper
The matter has also reached the Haryana State Commission for Women.
The commission issued a summons asking Badshah to appear on March 13, after receiving complaints that the song violated cultural norms and the modesty of women.
Legal proceedings have been initiated under Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 3 and 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.
The lyrics of “Tateeree” were written by Badshah, while the music was composed by Hiten.
Haryanvi singer Simran Jaglan also featured on the track alongside the rapper.
Following the controversy, Badshah confirmed that the song has been taken down from digital platforms as part of his attempt to ease tensions.
