Pakistan has expressed concern over the situation in Venezuela, giving priority to the welfare of the Venezuelan people.
A Foreign Office spokesperson, in a statement following the US action and the arrest of the Venezuelan president and his wife, said Pakistan emphasises restraint and reduction of tensions to resolve the crisis.
According to the statement, adherence to the United Nations Charter and principles of international law is essential for resolving disputes. The government is closely monitoring developments in Venezuela and is in contact with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of the Pakistani community residing there.
It may be noted that the previous day, US forces carried out attacks in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, and other areas, following which President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were taken into custody and transferred to the United States.
Venezuelan Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez has temporarily assumed presidential responsibilities under a court order. She rejected the recent statement by US President Donald Trump and called for the immediate release of President Maduro.
The international community has condemned the US attacks on Venezuela. China has called for the release of President Maduro, while Malaysia described the US action as a violation of international law. France stated that the future of Venezuela can only be determined by its own people. The Prime Minister of Spain said that US intervention violates international law.
Former US Vice-President Kamala Harris also criticised the US action in Venezuela, stating that Trump’s measures have left America neither safer, stronger, nor more respected.
The Iranian Foreign Minister held a telephone conversation with his Venezuelan counterpart, expressing solidarity and describing the US attack on Venezuela as a terrible example of terrorism. Pope Leo, the spiritual leader of Christians, expressed concern over the situation and emphasised respect for human rights.
The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold a meeting on the situation in Venezuela tomorrow.
