Prince William and Kate Middleton were away for the Christmas holidays when a man was caught trespassing on the grounds of Kensington Palace.
The incident prompted a police investigation and the arrest of the suspect, raising concerns about royal security.
The suspect, identified as Derek Egan, entered Kensington Palace grounds on two occasions just days apart, on December 21 and 23. Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Royal and Specialist Protection Command discovered him during both incidents.
Egan was carrying a “heavy rucksack” when he was arrested. He has been charged with trespassing and remains in custody after previously causing disruption during court proceedings.
Court proceedings underway
District Judge Sam Goozee confirmed that the case would proceed in Egan’s absence on January 6 due to his disorderly behavior toward officers and the court. The judge also denied bail, citing the potential for a custodial sentence if convicted.
The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that the case is being treated seriously due to the involvement of the Royal family. Since the charges relate to the security of the royals, they require the Attorney General’s consent before prosecution can proceed.
