Sixteen years after 3 Idiots redefined Bollywood storytelling, sequel rumours have once again stirred excitement among fans.
However, lead stars Aamir Khan and R Madhavan have now responded to the speculation, offering clarity on where things stand.
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots not only set new trends in Hindi cinema but also emerged as a record-breaking blockbuster. The film’s dialogues, characters, and message continue to resonate strongly with audiences even today.
Over the years, fans have repeatedly expressed hope for a sequel. Recent reports reignited that excitement by suggesting that a second part could be in the works, possibly titled 4 Idiots, featuring the original cast along with an additional main character.
R Madhavan calls sequel idea “far-fetched”
When contacted by Bollywood Hungama, R Madhavan said he had no information about any sequel being planned. While he admitted the idea sounds appealing, he questioned its practicality.
“A sequel to 3 Idiots sounds great. But it also sounds far-fetched,” Madhavan said. He pointed out that he, Aamir Khan, and Sharman Joshi are much older now and questioned where their characters would go in a sequel.
Madhavan added that while he would love to work with director Rajkumar Hirani again, revisiting 3 Idiots might not make creative sense. “3 Idiots again? I think that would be idiotic,” he remarked.
Aamir Khan says no one has approached him
Aamir Khan, who played the iconic character Rancho, also addressed the rumours. He said he would be happy to be part of a sequel but confirmed that no discussions have taken place.
“We had so much fun making that film,” Aamir said, adding that Rancho remains the most popular character of his career. “People still talk about Rancho. So yeah, I’d love to do a sequel. But no one has approached me.”
3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan, went on to earn ₹200 crore at the box office. Beyond its commercial success, the film became a cultural phenomenon, influencing conversations around education, careers, and societal pressure.
Its lasting popularity explains why sequel rumours continue to surface, even after more than a decade.
