A special court in Adiala Jail on Saturday sentenced Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to a combined 17-year prison term in the Toshakhana 2 case.
Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand presided over the hearing in Adiala Jail.
-
Bushra Bibi’s sentence: 10 years under Section 409 and an additional 7 years under Sections 5, 2, and 47.
-
Imran Khan’s sentence: 10 years under Section 409 and 7 years under Sections 5, 2, and 47.
-
Fines: Both were ordered to pay Rs16.4 million each.
The total combined prison sentence for both stands at 17 years each.
The Toshakhana 2 case
The case stems from gifts received from Saudi Arabia during Khan’s premiership (2018–2022), which were required to be submitted to the relevant departments as per the 2018 Toshakhana rules.
The prosecution argued that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi failed to register the gifts properly, instead using letters from deputy multi-secretaries to retain them illegally.
-
Value of Gifts: Approximately €38 million (around Rs71.5 million).
-
Loss to National Exchequer: Undervaluation of gifts caused a loss of Rs35.28 million.
The reference included a jewellery set gifted to Bushra Bibi during a May 2021 visit to Saudi Arabia, comprising a ring, bracelet, necklace, and earrings.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the case in August 2022 after a 37-day investigation.
-
The couple was formally indicted in December 2024.
-
Acquittal pleas were rejected by a special Islamabad court.
-
This case is separate from the first Toshakhana case, in which the couple was sentenced to 14 years and fined Rs1.57 billion collectively. That sentence was later suspended by the Islamabad High Court in April 2024.
