India finished the opening day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in a commanding position at 368 for 3 after centuries from Shubman Gill and KL Rahul at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh.
After electing to bat first, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for 24 when Mohammad Saleem had him caught behind with the score on 41.
KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan then steadied the innings with a second-wicket partnership of 139 runs. Sudharsan struck 81 from 104 balls, including 13 fours, before he was caught behind off Saleem.
Rahul continued to anchor the innings and reached his century from 164 deliveries. He made 100 from 165 balls with 11 boundaries before he was caught by Rahmanullah Gurbaz off Ziaur Rahman.
India were 247 for 3 when Rahul departed, but captain Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant ensured there were no further setbacks.
Gill completed his 11th Test century from 138 balls and remained unbeaten on 103 at the close, having struck 11 fours and one six.
Pant provided late momentum with an unbeaten 50 from 70 deliveries, including three sixes and two fours.
The pair shared an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 121 runs as India closed the day on 368 for 3 from 85 overs.
For Afghanistan, Mohammad Saleem was the most successful bowler with 2 for 67, while Ziaur Rahman claimed one wicket.
India will resume on the second day with Gill and Pant at the crease and a strong platform already established.
