Australian veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon picked up his 564th wicket in the third Test against England in Adelaide on Thursday, surpassing fellow Australian great Glenn McGrath to move to sixth on the all-time list.
According to details surfaced, Lyon, who imparts flight on the ball, bowled Ben Duckett on day two of his 141st Test to reach the milestone — one of two wickets he took in a sensational opening over that also accounted for Ollie Pope.
His next target is England seamer Stuart Broad (604), followed by Indian great Anil Kumble (619).
Sri Lankan bowling maestro Muttiah Muralitharan leads the all-time wicket-takers with 800 wickets, followed by Australian Shane Warne (708) and England’s James Anderson (704).
Recently, Lyon said he is in some of the best form of his life and has no plans to retire. Part of his longevity is attributed to his decision to avoid international white-ball cricket since 2019.
