The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) have issued a joint declaration reaffirming their commitment to judicial independence, the supremacy of law, and upholding the Constitution of Pakistan.
The statement comes amid attempts by some political factions to create division within the legal community.
The joint statement highlighted that certain political elements are attempting to sow chaos and disrupt the legal community to further their own agendas. “These elements often issue statements that are intended to harm the democratic system of the country,” the declaration said.
Both PBC and SCBA strongly condemned statements by unelected individuals and assured that such attempts to destabilize the legal system will fail.Institutional Statements Only Represent the Legal Community
The bodies clarified that only official institutional statements reflect the views of the legal community. “Any individual or minority statement will not represent the entire legal fraternity,” the declaration added, emphasizing that the legal community remains firmly committed to the rule of law and upholding Pakistan’s Constitution.
Support for the Constitutional Court
The statement reiterated support for the establishment of a Constitutional Court through the 27th Constitutional Amendment. This amendment is aimed at ensuring equal representation of provinces and enabling timely hearings of constitutional and political matters in the Supreme Court.
Both councils confirmed they will closely observe the entire process, including the appointment of judges. If necessary, they will voice concerns and grievances through formal decisions and resolutions of their General Houses.
