The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has reserved its verdict on a petition seeking early local government elections in the federal capital.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani highlighted that the local government system remains paralyzed, and legal provisions are being repeatedly violated.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani presided over the petition challenging the delay in holding local government elections. He observed that the absence of elections has stalled the system, preventing property tax collection and proper governance.
The judge criticised authorities, stating that despite previous court directives, elections have not been conducted. He expressed surprise over the division bench suspending elections after initially approving a date.
Govt and ECP response
Addressing the court, the Assistant Attorney General admitted that the law has been violated continuously since 2021, citing delays due to pending legislation on local government elections.
Election Commission DG Law Arshad Khan explained that complications in the Local Government Act 2025 amendments contributed to the delays. Justice Kayani pressed the commission, asking when a schedule for the elections would be provided, noting that the court is ready to set an expected date once the schedule is submitted.
After hearing all arguments, the IHC reserved its decision. The ruling is awaited as stakeholders and citizens look forward to resuming local governance in Islamabad.
