An unusual divorce case in Turkey drew public attention when a man agreed to pay his former wife 10,000 lira (about 240 US dollars) every three months for the care of their two cats.
Buğra B., a resident of Istanbul, filed for divorce from his wife, Ezgi B., through mutual consent.
What made the case remarkable was that neither party sought financial compensation or maintenance from the other. Instead, they included a unique clause in their divorce agreement that could set a precedent for future cases involving couples with pets.
According to the agreement, the two cats, owned by Buğra B., will remain with Ezgi B., while he will pay 10,000 lira every three months to cover their upkeep.
The unusual settlement has already been described in Turkey as a “new form of allowance” and is seen as a potential legal reference for cases concerning financial responsibility for pets after divorce.
