A bear that injured four workers in attacks at two factories in Fukushima on Tuesday remains at large after evading multiple attempts to capture it, Japanese media reported.
The bear reportedly hid inside a building after attacking four people at the factories. Authorities later decided to deploy hunters, traps and tranquilliser drugs to capture the animal. However, the bear managed to evade all measures and escaped.
Media reports stated that the bear had still not been captured as of Friday.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, the Fukushima mayor said evidence suggested the bear opened a window by itself to escape. Paw prints were found near the point where it is believed to have left the building.
The mayor described the bear as highly intelligent and said it may also have turned on a water tap by itself to drink water.
He said hunters, police officers and firefighters employed all available measures to capture the animal, but the operation did not succeed despite their efforts.
According to foreign media reports, 13 people were killed in bear attacks across Japan last year.
