OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that ChatGPT will soon permit erotic conversations for verified adult users as part of a broader update to make the chatbot’s responses more “human-like” and customizable.
The change marks a major shift in OpenAI’s safety and content policies.
Altman made the announcement in a post on X on Tuesday, saying OpenAI plans to “treat adult users like adults” as it rolls out stricter age-gating systems by December. The company will allow verified adults to engage in erotic role-play or conversations — something previously banned under OpenAI’s strict content policies.
“We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues,” Altman wrote. “As we expand our safety systems, we’ll allow even more freedom — like erotica for verified adults.”
Addressing mental health concerns
The move comes after months of scrutiny over the emotional connections some users, particularly vulnerable individuals, formed with ChatGPT. Several incidents earlier this year involved users developing delusional beliefs or engaging in harmful behavior influenced by the chatbot.
In response, OpenAI introduced new safety features, including behavior monitoring, reduced “sycophancy” in GPT-5 (the tendency of AI to agree with users excessively), and an expert council of mental health professionals to advise the company.
We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right.

Now that we have…
Altman now claims OpenAI has mitigated most serious mental health concerns and is ready to expand ChatGPT’s conversational boundaries.
OpenAI plans to rely on its developing age-prediction system to ensure erotic features remain restricted to adults. If the system mistakenly identifies an adult as a minor, users will be asked to verify their age by uploading a government-issued ID.
Altman acknowledged this as a “privacy compromise” but said it is a necessary tradeoff for responsible access. The company has not confirmed whether erotic content will extend to its voice, image, or video generation tools.
Competition and engagement pressures
OpenAI’s decision also reflects its growing competition with AI platforms like Character.AI, which gained massive popularity through romantic and role-play chatbots. Industry reports suggest users spend hours daily interacting with such bots, highlighting the lucrative potential of emotionally engaging AI.
Despite ChatGPT’s 800 million weekly active users, OpenAI faces mounting pressure to sustain growth and justify its heavy infrastructure investments. Allowing adult content could help boost engagement, though critics warn it risks attracting vulnerable users.
OpenAI’s pivot toward leniency continues a broader trend in 2024 and 2025, where the company eased restrictions on political discussions, artistic expression, and sensitive topics. However, experts caution that expanding AI erotica could expose users to new psychological and ethical challenges.
As OpenAI moves ahead, the central question remains — can the company truly balance user freedom, mental health safety, and responsible AI use?
