China is set to make history once again in the field of engineering as it opens the world’s highest bridge to traffic on September 28.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, located in Guizhou Province, soars to an astonishing height of 625 meters—higher than the iconic World Trade Center in the United States.
World records in bridge engineering
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge will mark a milestone by setting two world records:
-
The highest bridge in the world.
-
The largest span bridge ever built in a mountainous area.
The structure stretches over 2,890 meters, with its main span covering 1,420 meters. Built in just three years, the project cost around $283 million, showcasing China’s growing expertise in large-scale construction.
Engineering marvel with advanced safety
Experts have described the bridge as a modern engineering masterpiece. Designed with advanced construction techniques, it is capable of withstanding earthquakes and extreme weather conditions.
The bridge not only demonstrates technological progress but also promises to transform regional mobility. Travel times across the rugged terrain of Guizhou will be significantly reduced, allowing faster movement of goods and people.
The project is a vital component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to enhance connectivity and development in remote and mountainous regions. By improving transportation links, the bridge is expected to stimulate trade, attract investment, and promote tourism in Guizhou Province.
Standing taller than some of the world’s most famous skyscrapers, the bridge is expected to become a major tourist attraction in its own right. Its breathtaking height and scenic location are likely to draw visitors from across China and abroad, offering a new economic lifeline for local communities.
