Nintendo is reportedly preparing to air a new Nintendo Direct broadcast in mid-September, according to sources cited by Video Games Chronicle (VGC).
According to IGN, the report follows months of speculation fuelled by a series of smaller showcases focused on third-party titles and individual games, including a recent presentation on Kirby Air Riders. The upcoming broadcast is expected to address several unresolved questions, including the release date for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.
Announced for 2025, Metroid Prime 4 has remained absent from public view since the full unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 in April. The ongoing silence has led to concerns over a possible delay — a scenario Nintendo may seek to avoid.
The timing also coincides with the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., following a major celebration for the franchise’s 35th anniversary in 2020, which featured the limited-time release Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros. 35, and the opening of Super Nintendo World.
While Nintendo has confirmed a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie for release next year, it has yet to announce any plans for commemorative game titles. Industry watchers have speculated that Nintendo could re-release a classic 3D Mario title or offer a preview of a new flagship entry for the Switch 2.
Nintendo has historically held a major Direct broadcast in September each year since 2016, with the exception of 2024, when it delayed announcements ahead of the Switch 2 reveal.
The remainder of Nintendo’s 2025 release schedule for the Switch 2 includes Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Star-Crossed World on 28 August, followed by Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on 16 October, and Kirby Air Riders on 20 November.
