An individual who appeared on TikTok as a female influencer under the name Yasmin has been identified as an 18-year-old male student, authorities in Egypt confirmed.
The young man, named Abdulrahman, was found to be uploading videos while disguised as a woman.
Police arrested Abdulrahman in the Sharqia Governorate following several complaints regarding videos described as provocative and offensive to public decency and social values. The content included dance footage and other material that drew widespread criticism.
According to the Ministry of Interior, Abdulrahman had created the account using a female identity to increase followers. He now faces charges related to identity concealment and distribution of inappropriate material. Authorities also seized his mobile phone and digital accounts.
Following his arrest, the Public Prosecution ordered a four-day detention. A medical examination was conducted, and Abdulrahman admitted to the offences. He was later released on bail set at E£5,000 (approximately US$105).
The suspect resides with his mother in a village in the eastern Nile Delta. Local residents expressed shock at the revelation, especially as his mother is widely regarded as a hardworking and respectable woman who raised her children alone after separating from her husband.
Abdulrahman had been studying tourism and hotel management at a technical institute.
This case forms part of a broader crackdown by Egyptian authorities on inappropriate content across social media. In recent years, several TikTok users—mostly women—have faced arrest and imprisonment under similar charges.
